The Parliamentary Select Committee on Works and Housing has summoned the contractor handling the Dansoman Sea Defense Project to appear before it over delays and concerns about the progress of work.
The Committee’s action follows growing complaints from residents of Dansoman, especially those living along the Gbegbeyise and Shiabu coastal areas, who have been affected by frequent tidal waves and erosion.
Chairman of the Committee, Isaac Adongo, said the invitation is part of efforts to ensure accountability and transparency in the execution of the project. According to him, the project, which began in 2021, was expected to be completed within two years but has suffered several setbacks.
“We have received numerous complaints from residents and local authorities about the state of the coastline. The contractor must appear before Parliament to explain the reasons for the delays and the current state of work,” Mr. Adongo said.
Some residents who spoke to journalists expressed disappointment over the slow progress of the project, saying their communities continue to experience the destructive effects of tidal waves.
The Dansoman Sea Defense Project forms part of government’s coastal protection programme aimed at preventing further destruction along the country’s shorelines. Similar projects are being undertaken in Ada, Keta and Axim.
The Committee is also expected to engage officials from the Ministry of Works and Housing to provide updates on the progress and funding of all coastal protection projects across the country.
