Members of the Tema-Ashaiman Drivers Union have threatened to park their vehicles over the deplorable state of roads linking several communities within the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality.
Mr Iddi Fuseini, the Chairman of the Tema Drivers Union, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that drivers were facing unbearable challenges as the poor road network had taken a heavy toll on their vehicles.
He said more than 80 per cent of their commercial cars had broken down, putting unnecessary financial pressure on drivers and vehicle owners alike.
Mr Fuseini said the situation had reached a critical stage where most drivers risked losing their jobs because their car owners would no longer tolerate frequent excuses over vehicle breakdowns.
“The spare parts for the vehicles are very expensive, and we can no longer afford to repair our vehicles every week,” he lamented.
Mr Fuseini urged the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly to act swiftly, noting that the assembly could not sit unconcerned while the road conditions continued to worsen, stressing that good roads were essential for economic activity and the daily movement of residents within the municipality.
The union had issued a two-week ultimatum to authorities to address the problem, failure of which no vehicle would operate from the affected communities, including Saki, Bediako, Gbetsile, Zenu, Bethlehem, and other adjoining areas.
He emphasised that the intended action was not meant to inconvenience commuters but to draw urgent attention to the plight of drivers and residents who depended on these roads daily.
Meanwhile, some of the affected residents within Saki, Bediako, Gbetsile, Sebrepor, and its environs appealed to the railways development authority to urgently consider building a train station within the enclave to provide alternative transport for them to ease the challenges posed by the deplorable state of the roads within the areas.
