A new report by the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ), based on responses from ๐Ÿ,๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ” ๐ฃ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ง๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ“ ๐œ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ, documents how poor working conditions, threats and restrictions on media freedom are weakening journalism across Africa.

๐ŸŸ  ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ% work without written contracts and ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ% lack social protection.
๐Ÿšจ ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ“% have faced threats or intimidation linked to their work.
โš ๏ธ ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ’% practise self-censorship frequently or occasionally.
๐Ÿ” ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ‘% have received no digital safety training.
๐Ÿ“‰ ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ•% have considered leaving journalism.
Women journalists face additional risks, including sexual harassment and online abuse. Journalists also report burnout and a lack of mental health support at work.
โ€œJournalists are expected to inform the public while struggling to survive,โ€ says FAJ President Omar Faruk Osman. โ€œWhen journalists cannot earn a living, work safely or report freely, media freedom exists only on paper.โ€
FAJ is calling for fair pay, written contracts, social protection, safe workplaces and stronger protection from attacks and intimidation. Governments and news media organisations must also defend editorial independence, improve access to information and ensure women journalists can work free from discrimination and abuse.
