As artificial intelligence rapidly transforms economies, education, healthcare, governance and everyday life, global leaders are intensifying efforts to ensure the technology is developed responsibly and benefits everyone.

A United Nations-led Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance has opened, bringing together governments, technology companies, researchers, civil society organizations and the technical community to address some of the world’s most pressing AI challenges.
The discussions focus on strengthening AI safety, accountability, transparency and human oversight while ensuring innovation remains inclusive and respects human rights. Participants are also exploring ways to reduce the widening digital divide, promote equitable access to AI technologies and establish international cooperation on common governance standards.
Speaking at the opening, representatives emphasized that AI’s enormous potential must be matched with robust safeguards to prevent misuse, discrimination, misinformation and other unintended consequences. The dialogue seeks practical approaches that encourage responsible innovation while protecting fundamental freedoms.
The meeting, held under the leadership of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and other UN partners, underscores the growing recognition that no single country or institution can govern AI alone. International collaboration is increasingly viewed as essential to ensuring AI serves humanity rather than deepening existing inequalities.
The event also features the participation of Khaled El-Enany alongside representatives from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), governments and leading experts who are contributing to discussions on the future of global AI governance.
For Africa, the dialogue presents an opportunity to advocate for policies that reflect the continent’s priorities, including digital inclusion, ethical innovation, skills development and equitable access to AI infrastructure. As countries across Africa increasingly adopt AI across sectors such as agriculture, health, education and public administration, experts say governance frameworks must evolve to ensure these technologies are deployed responsibly and leave no one behind.
The outcomes of the dialogue are expected to contribute to ongoing international efforts to establish principles and cooperative mechanisms for AI governance that prioritize human dignity, accountability and sustainable development.
As AI adoption accelerates globally, the challenge is no longer whether to regulate artificial intelligence, but how to develop governance systems that foster innovation while ensuring safety, accountability and inclusive benefits for all.
