The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has inaugurated a new nine-member Board of Directors with a mandate to provide strategic leadership and oversight as the State Broadcaster seeks to strengthen its operations and respond to the rapidly changing media environment.
The Board is chaired by Francis Mills Robertson, with Madam Bashiratu Kamal, Dr. Ahmed Dawale Mohammed, Dr. Jacob Ibrahim Abudu, Madam Hawa Muhammad Awal, Mr. Nathaniel Leslie Lomo-Mainoo, Mr. Emmanuel Kumadey and Dr. Abena Animwaa Yeboah-Banin serving as members. The Director-General of GBC, Professor Amin Alhassan, is also a member.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Chairperson of the National Media Commission (NMC), Professor Akua Biritwum, urged the new Board to approach its mandate with diligence and commitment.
She said the Board must help guide GBC through a new chapter while ensuring that the Corporation remains responsive to the changing needs of its audiences.
“The new Board must navigate this new chapter of the Corporation with diligence, while strengthening its operations and improving public service broadcasting.”
Professor Biritwum noted that the broadcasting industry was undergoing significant transformation, largely driven by digital technology, changing audience habits and increasing competition.
She urged the Board to support initiatives that would enable GBC to adapt to these developments without losing sight of its public service obligations.
“GBC must continue to evolve with the changing media landscape, while maintaining its important public service mandate to the people of Ghana.”
The Director-General of GBC, Professor Amin Alhassan, also briefed the gathering on the current state of the Corporation, outlining some of the opportunities and challenges confronting the national broadcaster.
The new Board is expected to provide strategic direction to address these challenges and position GBC to take advantage of emerging opportunities in the media industry.
For his part, the new Board Chair, Francis Mills Robertson, pledged to work closely with management and staff to consolidate the achievements of the Corporation and tackle the challenges confronting it.
“We will work with management and staff to build on the achievements of GBC while addressing the challenges that confront the Corporation.”
He said the Board would seek to provide the leadership and oversight necessary to strengthen GBC and position it for greater relevance and sustainability.
The inauguration marks the beginning of the Board’s tenure at a time when public broadcasters around the world are adapting to rapid technological changes and shifting audience preferences.
The new leadership is expected to support initiatives aimed at making GBC more innovative, efficient and sustainable, while ensuring that it continues to serve audiences across Ghana and beyond.
