Speaking at the 2nd World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) Honours Night organized by the Ghana Journalists Association in Accra, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo underscored the critical role of the media in strengthening democracy, promoting accountability, and ensuring informed citizen participation.
Drawing inspiration from media scholar Prof. Kwame Karikari, she noted that the media serves as a mirror of society, providing citizens with accurate and balanced information needed to make informed decisions and hold leaders accountable.
She commended the Ghana Journalists Association and journalists across the country for their dedication to truth, transparency, and national development. According to her, the media’s contribution to reporting on health, education, governance, justice, and environmental issues has amplified the voices of ordinary Ghanaians and strengthened democratic governance.
Nana Oye Bampoe Addo also paid tribute to journalists who have endured threats, attacks, and other challenges in the course of their work, describing their sacrifices as vital to protecting the public’s right to information.
The Deputy Chief of Staff acknowledged Ghana’s recent progress in press freedom and stressed that a vibrant and independent media remains essential for national development.
“A strong and vibrant press benefits every citizen by promoting accountability, transparency, and informed public participation,” she stated.
Addressing emerging challenges in the digital age, she emphasized the growing importance of ethical, professional, and fact-based journalism amid the rise of artificial intelligence and rapidly evolving communication technologies.
She urged media practitioners to uphold the highest standards of journalism while adapting to technological changes that continue to reshape the information landscape.
The event brought together media practitioners, civil society leaders, policymakers, and advocates of press freedom to celebrate individuals and institutions that have made significant contributions to media development and freedom of expression in Ghana.
Nana Oye Bampoe Addo concluded by honoring champions of press freedom and reaffirming her commitment to protecting media independence as a cornerstone of Ghana’s democracy and development.
