The first batch of Ghanaian evacuees from South Africa has safely arrived home following coordinated efforts by the Government of Ghana to assist citizens affected by recent developments in the southern African nation.
Evacuees arrive at Kotoka International Airport in Accera.
The returnees touched down at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Thursday, where they were received by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), immigration authorities, and family members.
Government officials described the evacuation exercise as part of Ghana’s commitment to protecting the welfare and safety of its citizens abroad, particularly during periods of uncertainty and distress.
Speaking at the airport, officials assured the evacuees of continued support and assistance as they reintegrate into their communities.
Some of the returnees expressed relief and gratitude to the Government of Ghana and diplomatic officials for facilitating their safe return home.
“We are grateful to be back home safely. The support from the Ghana High Commission and government officials throughout the process was very helpful,” one evacuee said.
Authorities indicated that arrangements are ongoing for additional groups of Ghanaians who are expected to return in the coming days.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs further urged Ghanaians living abroad to remain in contact with Ghana’s diplomatic missions and adhere to official advisories issued for their safety and well-being.
