Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has arrived in Libreville to participate in the inaugural Libreville International Forum for Innovation and Development, a high-profile gathering that is drawing global attention to Africa’s future in technology, governance, and economic transformation.

The forum, hosted under the patronage of Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, President of Gabon, brings together Heads of State, policymakers, investors, and technology leaders to explore how innovation can accelerate development across the continent.
Held at the newly inaugurated Omar Bongo Ondimba Congress Centre, the event is themed “Political Stability, Business Climate, and Artificial Intelligence: Catalysts for Growth.” The venue itself symbolizes Gabon’s ambition to position Libreville as a hub for global dialogue and investment.
A Vision for Africa’s Future
Speaking upon arrival, Mr. Mahama emphasized the importance of aligning governance with technological progress.
“Africa stands at a critical juncture where political stability and innovation must go hand in hand. We cannot achieve sustainable development without leveraging technology and creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive,” he said.
He further stressed the need for collaboration between governments and the private sector:
“Bridging the gap between public policy and private-sector investment is essential. Our goal must be inclusive growth that benefits every African citizen, not just a few.”
Gabon’s Strategic Ambition
President Nguema, in his opening remarks, highlighted Gabon’s vision of becoming a leading innovation destination on the continent.
“This forum marks a new chapter for Gabon. We are committed to building a dynamic ecosystem where ideas, investment, and innovation converge to drive sustainable growth,” he stated.
He added that the choice of theme reflects Africa’s urgent priorities:
“Political stability, a strong business climate, and the adoption of artificial intelligence are no longer optional—they are necessary conditions for progress in the 21st century.”
A Platform for Investment and Ideas
Organisers say the forum is designed not only as a platform for dialogue but also as a catalyst for tangible investment opportunities. Global investors and technology experts are engaging with African leaders to identify pathways for digital transformation and economic diversification.
According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson to the President:
“President Mahama’s participation underscores Ghana’s commitment to fostering partnerships that will unlock innovation-driven growth across Africa.”
He added:
“The discussions here will help shape policies that encourage transparency, attract investment, and harness digital tools for development.”
John Mahama welcomed to Libreville, Gabon.
Towards the Libreville Declaration
The forum is expected to culminate in the adoption of the Libreville Declaration, a strategic document outlining commitments by African leaders to strengthen governance, promote transparency, and accelerate digital integration.
Analysts believe the declaration could serve as a roadmap for countries seeking to balance rapid technological advancement with inclusive economic policies.
A Defining Moment
As global economies increasingly turn to artificial intelligence and digital innovation, Africa’s participation in shaping this future is seen as critical. Events like the Libreville Forum highlight the continent’s growing role in global conversations about development and technology.
For Ghana, Mr. Mahama’s presence signals a continued commitment to regional cooperation and forward-looking policies.
“Africa’s future depends on the decisions we make today,” Mahama noted. “We must act boldly, collaborate widely, and innovate relentlessly.”
The inaugural Libreville International Forum is more than a conference—it is a statement of intent. With leaders like Mahama and Nguema at the forefront, Africa is positioning itself not just as a participant, but as a driver of global innovation and development.
