A number of Ghanaian Members of Parliament (MPs) on Friday January 6, 2025 appeared in the Chamber dressed in traditional Fugu attire, a move widely interpreted as a show of cultural pride and solidarity following reports of online mockery directed at President John Dramani Mahama by some Zambian social media users.
The development follows viral reactions on social media after President Mahama was seen wearing Fugu, a handwoven smock associated with northern Ghana, during a recent public engagement. While many Ghanaians praised the President for promoting indigenous culture, some foreign online commentators reportedly ridiculed the outfit, sparking backlash from sections of the Ghanaian public.

In response, MPs across party lines wore the traditional attire during parliamentary proceedings, signaling support for Ghana’s cultural heritage and rejecting what they described as disrespect toward national identity.
