The International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT) Cameroon Chapter has announced the election of Dr. Welisane Mokwe Nkeng as its new President, effective 2026, following an Extra-Ordinary General Meeting convened to strengthen the leadership and operational framework of the organisation.

Dr. Welisane’s appointment comes at a critical moment for the media landscape, as issues of gender equality, ethical journalism, women’s representation and inclusive storytelling continue to dominate global and national discourse. Her leadership is expected to bring renewed energy, strategic direction, and visibility to the work of IAWRT Cameroon.
A seasoned journalist, diplomat, gender advocate and development practitioner, Dr. Welisane Mokwe Nkeng brings to the role an impressive blend of academic excellence and hands-on experience.
In her new role as IAWRT Cameroon President, she is expected to strengthen the organization’s mission of promoting women’s voices in media, supporting female journalists, fostering ethical reporting, and creating safe, inclusive spaces for women in broadcasting and digital media. Her vision includes capacity building for young women journalists, stronger regional and international collaborations, and positioning IAWRT Cameroon as a leading voice on gender-responsive media practice.

Speaking on the appointment, she described the role as both an honour and a responsibility:
“IAWRT represents the power of women’s voices in shaping narratives, influencing policy and advancing social change. I am thankful to the outgoing president Mme Tchonko Becky Bissong for her leadership and for setting the precedence. Not forgetting Mme Olivia Tumanjong who brought me to IAWRT. I am committed to building a stronger, more visible and more impactful IAWRT Cameroon, one that supports women journalists, amplifies women’s stories and contributes meaningfully to national and global conversations.”

The International Association of Women in Radio and Television  is a global network of women media professionals working to advance women’s rights, freedom of expression and gender-sensitive media practices. The Cameroon Chapter continues to play a vital role in mentoring women journalists and advocating for equitable representation in media spaces.
