Ambassador Kofi Nyidevu Awoonor was a celebrated Ghanaian poet, intellectual, and statesman who brought cultural depth and moral clarity to international diplomacy. From 1990 to 1994, he served as Ghana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, representing the nation during a pivotal era of global transition. In this role, he led high-level negotiations and engaged in multilateral diplomacy across key UN agendas, including peace, development, and human rights.
Ambassador Awoonor also chaired several UN bodies, notably the Subcommittee of the Special Committee against Apartheid on the Implementation of United Nations Resolutions on Collaboration with South Africa. Under his leadership, the subcommittee monitored and reported on global compliance with UN resolutions aimed at isolating the apartheid regime, reinforcing the UN’s commitment to justice and international solidarity.

Kofi Awoonor (born George Kofi Nyidevu Awoonor-Williams; 13 March 1935 – 21 September 2013) was a Ghanaian poet, author and diplomat. His work combined the poetic traditions of his native Ewe people with contemporary and religious symbolism to depict Africa during decolonization. He started writing under the name George Awoonor-Williams,[1] and was also published as Kofi Nyidevu Awoonor. He taught African literature at the University of Ghana. Professor Awoonor was among those who were killed in the September 2013 attack at Westgate shopping mall in NairobiKenya, where he was a participant at the Storymoja Hay Festival.
