The Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Ghana, H.E. Mariana Gonçalves Madeira, has paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey. She was accompanied by the Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Alexandre Souto.
The visit sought to strengthen bilateral relations and explore collaboration, particularly in social protection and school feeding. Discussions also touched on Ghana’s participation in the Second Global Summit of the School Meals Coalition in September 2025.
The Ambassador shared insights on the newly launched Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, a G20-led initiative under Brazil’s presidency, aimed at expanding social protection, improving nutrition, and promoting climate-resilient agriculture with support from the FAO and other partners.
Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to inclusive social protection. “We are determined to strengthen existing programmes, improve efficiency, and build partnerships that deliver lasting impact for the people of Ghana,” she stated.
She also commended President H.E. John Dramani Mahama for his leadership, particularly through the passage of the Social Protection Act, 2025 (Act 1148), which provides a strong legal framework for scaling up LEAP, school feeding, and other safety net initiatives.
The Minister further highlighted the President’s investments in the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) to expand coverage, improve meal quality, and support local farmers. “The programme is not just about meals; it is about healthier children, better school attendance, stronger local economies, and empowering women farmers,” she emphasized.
The Minister reaffirmed Ghana’s readiness to deepen cooperation with Brazil and other global partners in advancing social protection and reducing poverty.
