The Madina District Court has ordered the Prosecution in the trial of the alleged murderer of Investigative Journalist Ahmed Suale to file the Bill of Indictment by May 13 when the committal proceedings continue.
The Magistrate Susana Nyarkotey said the order is in line with the court’s duty to ensure that the proceedings do not delay.
The alleged killer Daniel Owusu Koranteng also known as Amakye is facing two counts of abetment to commit crime and murder.
He has been remanded into prison custody following failed attempts by his lawyers to secure him bail. The Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Nana Afua Bamfoa Bamfo said the accused previously worked together with the late Ahmed Suale at Tiger Eye P.I led by Investigative Journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
She told the court that the accused had close relationship with the deceased and his family before his death. Sometime in June 2018, tensions allegedly escalated when former MP for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong broadcasted images of the late Ahmed Suale on his television station and further called for attacks against him. Chief Inspector Bamfo said the deceased later identified the accused as the person who provided Mr. Ken Agyapong with his photographs and allegedly confronted him through WhatsApp. The Court heard that on January 16, 2019, following the publication of Ahmed Suale’s images, he was shot and killed in Madina. The Prosecutor said investigations disclosed that the accused person who was privy to the deceased’s residence and possible hideouts, allegedly led two other culprits currently at large to the house where they shot and killed Ahmed Suale.
Chief Inspector Bamfo told the Court that call records allegedly placed the accused in Madina near the deceased’s residence before and during the murder.
The Prosecutor said investigations are underway to arrest the other suspects at large. A Defence Lawyer Kofi Osei Asare told the court that he was hopeful that the Bill of Indictment would be ready at the next adjourned date considering that the liberty of his client is at stake. Speaking to GBC News another Defence Lawyer Kofi Essel lamented the slow pace of the committal process.
