Chief Justice has 10 days to respond to removal petitions

President John Mahama has given Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo 10 days to submit a preliminary response to three petitions demanding her removal from office. This follows a request by the Chief Justice demanding copies of the petitions submitted by three individuals on February 14 and March 17, 2025, alleging misconduct and abuse of power.

In a statement signed by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, the President also condemned the unauthorized leakage of confidential documents related to the petition for the removal of the Chief Justice.

President Mahama however, assured the Chief Justice that due process will be followed in handling the matter, emphasizing that the judicial leader would receive a full and fair opportunity to be heard.

The letter highlights the delicate nature of the proceedings, noting that the President had already consulted the Council of State, chaired by former Speaker, Doe Adjaho, as required by Article 146(6) of the Constitution.

This consultation took place on March 24, with the Council providing its response three days later.
