Ghana has concluded the evacuation of Ghanaians affected by the recent wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced.
The final batch of 41 Ghanaian evacuees arrived in Accra on September 4, 2026, bringing the total number evacuated to about 1,900, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
At a press briefing on September 7, Ablakwa disclosed that the broader evacuation exercise brought 1,964 Ghanaians home and cost GH¢49.72 million. The government itself contributed GH¢33.72 million, while Engineers and Planners donated GH¢16 million towards the exercise.
The returnees have been supported with reintegration allowances, transportation assistance, medical and psychosocial support, health insurance registration and employment assistance.
The minister also disclosed that four Ghanaians were killed in South Africa between April and July 2026 amid renewed xenophobic violence.
