President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday, August 27, 2026, cut sod for the construction of a seven-storey multi-purpose car park and Airport Hotels Complex at the Accra International Airport, complementing Terminal 3.
The multi-billion project will provide approximately 2,030 covered parking spaces and is expected to be completed within 24 months. It will also feature:
- Two hotels with a combined 370 rooms
- A pedestrian connection to Terminal 3
- Shopping mall and food court
- Retail and office spaces
- Sky lounge
- Aircraft-viewing sky observatory
- Modern parking and security systems

President Mahama said the project is designed to address increasing passenger numbers, reduce congestion and prepare Ghana’s principal international gateway for future growth. Passenger traffic reportedly rose from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025, increasing pressure on existing airport infrastructure.
The President also stressed that modern airports are no longer simply places for aircraft arrivals and departures but have become commercial, hospitality, tourism, logistics and business ecosystems that can stimulate economic activity.
Importantly, Mahama said the airport expansion projects—including the new Terminal 3 car park development, the Terminal 2–3 connecting concourse, the new GCAA control tower and Terminal 2 refurbishment—are being financed from the balance sheets of GACL and GCAA, without direct Government budget support.
The bigger picture: The development forms part of Ghana’s broader ambition to position the country as a competitive aviation and transit hub in West Africa, while improving the experience of passengers, tourists and business travelers.
