The Secretariat of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralization (IMCCoD) has successfully organised a Media Sensitization and Policy Orientation Workshop on the National Decentralization Policy and Strategic Framework (2026–2030), aimed at strengthening public understanding of Ghana’s decentralization agenda and promoting accountable local governance.

Dr, Hoedofia, Prof. Kwamena Ahowi, and Prof. Lord Mensah.
The workshop brought together media practitioners from across the country to equip them with deeper knowledge of the government’s decentralisation reforms and the strategic direction outlined in the new policy framework. The engagement also sought to enhance the media’s role in promoting citizen participation, transparency, and effective local governance.
Participants were taken through key aspects of the National Decentralisation Policy and Strategic Framework, including governance reforms, institutional coordination, fiscal decentralisation, and strategies to improve service delivery at the local level.
The workshop featured presentations by renowned governance and decentralisation experts, including Kwamena Ahwoi and Esther Ofei-Aboagye, who shared valuable insights on the evolution of decentralisation in Ghana and the critical role of the media in supporting democratic governance.
Prof. Ahwoi highlighted the importance of decentralisation in deepening democracy and ensuring development reaches communities at the grassroots level. He encouraged journalists to actively monitor local governance processes and provide accurate information to the public to strengthen accountability within Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
Dr. Ofei-Aboagye also stressed the need for inclusive citizen participation in governance and called on the media to amplify community voices and promote civic engagement in local development planning and implementation.
Officials of the IMCCoD Secretariat noted that the workshop forms part of broader efforts to build stakeholder awareness and strengthen collaboration in the implementation of the National Decentralisation Policy and Strategic Framework (2026–2030).
The Secretariat reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the media and other stakeholders to advance effective decentralisation, responsive governance, and sustainable local development across Ghana.
