Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, representing President John Dramani Mahama, joined the government and people of Guyana to commemorate the country’s 60th Independence Anniversary in a colorful national celebration marked by culture, unity and diplomacy.
The celebration, held in the capital, brought together government officials, diplomats, traditional leaders, members of the diplomatic corps and citizens from across the country to mark six decades of Guyana’s independence and national progress.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang described the anniversary celebration as a powerful reflection of Guyana’s rich cultural diversity, resilience and peaceful coexistence among its people.
She noted that the event highlighted the country’s commitment to unity despite its multicultural background and praised the people of Guyana for sustaining peace and national cohesion over the years.
“The celebration beautifully showcased the strength that comes from diversity and peaceful coexistence. It was inspiring to witness a nation united in pride, culture and shared purpose,” she stated.
The Vice President said Ghana values its longstanding relationship with Guyana and remains committed to strengthening cooperation between the two countries in areas including education, trade, culture, governance and development.
She also conveyed warm congratulations and goodwill from President Mahama and the people of Ghana to the government and citizens of Guyana on the historic milestone.
The anniversary activities featured vibrant cultural displays, music performances and patriotic ceremonies that reflected the country’s heritage and national identity.
The celebration climaxed shortly after midnight with a symbolic flag-raising ceremony, as thousands gathered in a moment of national pride to usher in the country’s 60th Independence Day.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang joined other dignitaries in witnessing the ceremonial event, which was accompanied by cheers, cultural performances and a display of national solidarity.
The visit also reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to deepening diplomatic and bilateral ties with Caribbean nations as part of broader South-South cooperation efforts.
