The Head of Programmes and Disaster Manager at the Ghana Red Cross Society, Jeremiah Afako, has emphasized the importance of the organization’s mission, fundamental principles, and the proper use of its emblem during a workshop held at Miklin Hotel on March 19th, 2026.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Afako outlined the core mission of the Red Cross, which focuses on alleviating human suffering, protecting life and health, and promoting human dignity, especially during emergencies and disasters. He stressed that the organization operates based on key fundamental principles such as humanity, neutrality, impartiality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.

Head of Programmes and Disaster Manager Ghana Red Cross Society, Jeremiah Afako with Journalists at the Training Session in Accra.Mr. Afako also educated participants on the main components of the Red Cross Movement, which include the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and the various National Societies, including Ghana’s.
A major highlight of his presentation was the discussion on the misuse and abuse of the Red Cross emblem. He warned that improper use of the emblem undermines its protective value, particularly in conflict and emergency situations where it serves as a symbol of neutrality and protection. He urged the public and institutions to respect regulations governing its use.
The workshop, held aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of the role and responsibilities of the Ghana Red Cross Society and to promote awareness about its humanitarian work across the country.
