Disability and Inclusive Education Advocate, Rebecca Ekpe, has called on journalists to promote responsible and inclusive reporting on children and persons with disabilities.
She says the media has a critical role to play in shaping public perceptions and ensuring that disability is reported in ways that promote dignity, inclusion and equal opportunities, rather than reinforcing stereotypes.

Speaking at a workshop on Disability and Inclusive Education organised by Chance for Childhood and its partners, Ms. Ekpe said inclusive education goes beyond placing children with disabilities in the same classroom with other children.
She explained that it requires removing barriers, creating supportive learning environments and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, participate and thrive.
Ms. Ekpe urged journalists to use their platforms to amplify the voices and experiences of children with disabilities, while holding duty-bearers accountable for providing the necessary support and facilities.
She also encouraged media practitioners to focus on responsible, respectful and solution-oriented journalism that promotes understanding and helps ensure that no child is left behind.
Meanwhile, basic schools across the country have officially reopened today, Tuesday, September 8, to begin the 2026/2027 academic year.
