The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has marked its 77th anniversary, celebrating more than seven decades of journalism, press freedom, professional development and service to Ghana’s democratic journey.

The anniversary was commemorated with a 77th Anniversary Lecture and Symposium at the British Council in Accra on Monday, August 17, 2026. The occasion also featured the swearing-in of newly constituted statutory committees of the Association.

The 77-year journey represents generations of Ghanaian journalists who have informed citizens, held public institutions accountable, amplified the voices of communities and contributed to national development.

The anniversary comes at a significant moment for Ghana’s media, with renewed conversations around press freedom, journalist safety, professional standards, misinformation, artificial intelligence, digital journalism and the welfare of media practitioners.

The GJA has consistently stressed that press freedom must go hand in hand with professionalism and responsibility. At its 2026 World Press Freedom Day celebrations, the Association highlighted Ghana’s improved position in the global press freedom rankings while calling for stronger protection of journalists and greater commitment to professional journalism.

A message for the future

Seventy-seven years is not merely an anniversary; it is a responsibility.

The GJA’s next chapter must be about building a stronger, safer and more sustainable journalism profession—one that embraces technology without surrendering ethics, defends press freedom without abandoning responsibility, and places the welfare and professional growth of journalists at the centre of its agenda.

“77 years of journalism. 77 years of courage. 77 years of holding power to account. The story continues.”

For the GJA, the anniversary is therefore both a celebration of its proud history and a call to prepare the profession for the next generation.

Happy 77th Anniversary to the Ghana Journalists Association—the voice of Ghana’s journalism profession.
