Ghana is hosting the first African Union (AU) Extraordinary Health Summit from Tuesday, July 21, with African Heads of State and Government gathering in Accra to adopt a fully costed continental roadmap aimed at ending AIDS and tuberculosis by 2030.
The two-day summit is bringing together political leaders, health ministers, development partners, and experts from across the continent to discuss coordinated strategies for tackling Africa’s major health challenges.
Delegates are considering measures to reduce preventable maternal deaths, combat communicable and non-communicable diseases, and strengthen national health systems to improve access to quality healthcare by 2030.

The summit is also focusing on sustainable health financing, expanding universal health coverage, improving disease surveillance, and enhancing preparedness for future public health emergencies.
The meeting is expected to conclude with the adoption of a comprehensive action plan that will guide member states in accelerating progress towards achieving the continent’s health targets under the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
