President John Mahama.
President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to invest $2 billion annually over four years under the government’s proposed $10 billion New Economy Programme to accelerate industrialisation, boost production, create jobs and position Ghana as a manufacturing and logistics hub for the West African sub-region.
The President said the programme would direct investments into productive sectors of the economy, with half of the funding earmarked for agriculture and agro-processing, while the remainder would support industry and the infrastructure needed to connect producers to markets.
The President made the announcement on Thursday 15th October, 2026 when he cut the sod for commencement of construction works on the Afienya Industrial Park, an initiative expected to expand industrial capacity, attract investment and create employment opportunities for Ghanaians.
President Mahama explained that the development of the industrial park was a strategic response to growing investor interest in Ghana and the lack of available space at the Tema Export Processing Zone (EPZ) to accommodate new enterprises.
Drawing on her 22 years of experience at the Bar, The Minister for Trade Agribusines and Industry Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare who double as the Board Chairperson of the Free Zones Authority, underscored the importance of securing land free from litigation to facilitate investment and prevent costly delays in industrial development.
She said the cooperation demonstrated by the traditional authorities and communities deserved recognition, as access to undisputed land was critical to creating an enabling environment for businesses to establish factories and expand their operations.
