Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has announced plans to appeal his 20-year prison sentence after being convicted by the Accra High Court in the Samreboi illegal mining case.
The court found him guilty of assigning mineral rights without the required approval and facilitating unlawful mining operations linked to Akonta Mining Limited. Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay sentenced him to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.

According to his legal team, they disagree with both the conviction and the sentence and will challenge the ruling at the Court of Appeal. Legal analysts say Wontumi may also apply for bail pending the determination of the appeal. The New Patriotic Party has rejected the court’s decision, describing the judgment as unjust, and says its leadership and legal team are reviewing the ruling while preparing the appeal process.
