As Africa commemorates Africa Day, the focus turns not only to the continent’s rich history and achievements but also to the voices and perspectives of its people.
In 2016, to mark its 10th anniversary, the Mo Ibrahim Foundation launched the MyAfrica photography competition, inviting Africans from across the continent to capture and share what Africa means to them through the lens of a camera.

Nearly a decade later, the Foundation is revisiting a selection of these powerful images as part of this year’s Africa Day celebrations. The photographs offer a unique glimpse into the diverse realities, aspirations, cultures and everyday experiences that define life across Africa.
From vibrant cityscapes and bustling markets to scenes of innovation, resilience and community spirit, the images reflect a continent rich in diversity and opportunity. They showcase not only Africa’s beauty but also the determination, creativity and optimism of its people.
According to the Foundation, the MyAfrica competition was designed to give Africans an opportunity to tell their own stories and present authentic narratives about the continent. The photographs challenge stereotypes and highlight the many dimensions of African life, identity and progress.
As Africa Day is observed across the continent and beyond, the revisited collection serves as a reminder that Africa’s story is best told by Africans themselves. Through their lenses, photographers captured moments that continue to inspire conversations about culture, development, unity and the future of the continent.
The celebration of these images underscores the enduring significance of Africa Day—a moment to reflect on the continent’s journey, celebrate its achievements, and envision a future shaped by the creativity, talent and aspirations of its people.
Africa Day, observed annually on May 25, commemorates the founding of the Organization of African Unity in 1963, now known as the African Union. It remains an important occasion for celebrating African unity, progress and shared aspiration.
