Women across Ghana’s mining industry are being celebrated today as the world marks the International Day of Women in Mining (IDWIM 2026), recognizing their growing role in shaping a safer, more inclusive and sustainable future for the sector.

The Australian High Commission in Ghana joined the global observance by reaffirming its commitment to advancing opportunities for women in mining and supporting initiatives that promote gender equality across the industry. The High Commission highlighted its partnership with Women in Mining Ghana (WIM Ghana), an organization dedicated to empowering women and increasing female participation and leadership in the mining value chain.

Mining remains one of Ghana’s most important economic sectors, yet women continue to face challenges including limited access to leadership positions, technical training, financing and decision-making opportunities. Despite these barriers, women are increasingly making their mark as engineers, geologists, environmental specialists, entrepreneurs, community leaders and policymakers.

In a statement marking the occasion, the Australian High Commission praised the resilience, innovation and leadership demonstrated by women across the industry, noting that their contributions are critical to building a mining sector that is not only productive but also environmentally responsible and socially inclusive.

The celebration also serves as a reminder of the need to accelerate efforts toward gender equity in mining. Stakeholders are calling for greater investment in mentorship, skills development, workplace safety and policies that support women’s advancement at all levels of the industry.

As Ghana continues to pursue responsible and sustainable mineral development, advocates say empowering women in mining is essential to unlocking the sector’s full potential and ensuring that the benefits of mining are shared more broadly across communities.

This year’s International Day of Women in Mining is being observed under a renewed global commitment to recognize the achievements of women in the sector while addressing the challenges that remain.

“When women thrive in mining, the industry becomes stronger, safer and more sustainable for everyone,” advocates say.
