META CUTS JOBS FOR AI PUSH
Technology giant Meta Platforms has laid off about 8,000 employees as part of a major restructuring exercise aimed at strengthening its focus on artificial intelligence, AI.
The layoffs, which affect nearly ten percent of the company’s global workforce, come as Chief Executive Officer, Mark Zuckerberg, increases investment in AI technologies and digital innovation.
As part of the restructuring, thousands of workers have also been reassigned to AI-related projects, reflecting the company’s growing emphasis on developing advanced artificial intelligence systems and integrating them across its platforms.
The development has, however, sparked concerns among employees over job security, workplace data use and the expanding influence of AI within the company’s operations. Some workers fear the rapid shift towards automation could lead to further job losses and changes in workplace responsibilities.
Meta says the restructuring is intended to improve efficiency and position the company to compete strongly in the fast-growing global AI industry. The company has in recent years increased spending on AI research and infrastructure as competition intensifies among major technology firms worldwide.
