Two armed robbery suspects have been shot following a gun battle with police after an attack on a mobile money (MoMo) vendor in Tema, authorities have confirmed.
In a statement issued on April 13, 2026, the Ghana Police Service said the incident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. at Aba Fosuah Plaza in Tema Community 5.
Preliminary investigations indicate that one of the suspects, who was riding as a pillion passenger on a motorbike, approached the female vendor under the pretext of making a cash withdrawal. As the vendor attempted to process the transaction, the suspect allegedly drew a pistol and demanded that she surrender a bag containing cash.
Police say the vendor resisted the demand, leading to a struggle that drew in the second suspect, who was waiting on the motorbike. During the confrontation, the pillion rider reportedly shot the victim in the leg. The suspects then seized the opportunity to flee the scene on the motorbike.
A police patrol team from the Tema Regional Operations Unit, which had been deployed nearby for security duties at an event, responded swiftly after receiving a distress call. The officers immediately pursued the suspects towards Tema Community 6.
According to the police, the suspects, who were riding a black Royal motorbike, attempted to evade arrest but opened fire on the pursuing officers near a junction close to Smart Hotel. The police returned fire, leading to an exchange during which both suspects sustained gunshot wounds and fell off the motorbike.
The suspects were subsequently overpowered and taken into custody. Police have not yet disclosed their identities or current condition.
Meanwhile, the injured vendor is said to have received medical attention, although her condition has not been officially updated.
The police say investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and to determine whether the suspects may be linked to other robbery cases in the area.
The Tema Regional Police Command has also assured the public of intensified security measures and urged residents, especially mobile money operators, to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities.
