Several injured after car ploughs through German pedestrian zone

Several people were injured when a car drove at high speed through a pedestrian zone in the German town of Hofgeismar on Friday morning, police said.

Eight people were injured in the incident, which occurred at around 10:30 am (0830 GMT), according to the latest findings. Four were taken to hospital as a precaution, after sustaining grazes, bruises or shock. No serious injuries are currently known of.

“According to witnesses, the man is said to have been experiencing medical problems immediately before the vehicle drove into the pedestrian zone,” police said.

The car crashed into the wall of a department store after travelling through the pedestrian zone. Police and emergency services attended the scene in high numbers.

The driver, a 68-year-old local, initially received first aid from passers-by. He was later taken to hospital, reportedly in a critical condition.

The incident caused significant damage to property in the pedestrian zone.

Witness reports

“Witnesses told officers at the scene that they had noticed the driver beforehand at a zebra crossing not far from Mühlenstrasse [the site of the incident],” police said. He had “appeared to be experiencing medical problems.”

“When they tried to speak to the man sitting behind the wheel, the Mercedes suddenly drove at high speed into the pedestrian zone, where it struck several pedestrians, collided with external shop stands, drove into the shop window of the department store and finally came to a halt shortly afterwards,” police said.
