President John Dramani Mahama has returned to Ghana after a high-level diplomatic mission to France, marking a significant moment in the country’s international engagement on global health and sustainable development.
The visit, which took him to the prestigious Élysée Palace, was characterized by strategic discussions and renewed cooperation between Ghana and France. At the heart of the trip was Mahama’s role as co-chair of the 2026 One Health Summit, alongside French President Emmanuel Macron.

The One Health Summit, a globally recognized platform, brings together world leaders, scientists, policymakers, and development partners to address interconnected health challenges—spanning human health, animal health, and environmental sustainability. In his address, President Mahama underscored the urgent need for collective global action in tackling emerging threats such as pandemics, climate-related health risks, and food security concerns.
He emphasized that Africa, often at the frontline of these challenges, must not only be seen as a vulnerable region but also as a key contributor to innovative and sustainable solutions. According to Mahama, the continent’s wealth of indigenous knowledge, coupled with growing scientific capacity, positions it uniquely to drive forward the One Health agenda.
“Africa must move from being a recipient of global health interventions to becoming a co-architect of solutions,” he noted, calling for increased investment in research, healthcare infrastructure, and cross-border collaboration.
His engagement with President Macron further strengthened diplomatic ties between Ghana and France, with both leaders exploring avenues for cooperation in public health systems, climate resilience, and agricultural sustainability. The bilateral discussions also touched on expanding partnerships in education, technology, and economic development.
Observers say Mahama’s prominent role at the summit signals Ghana’s rising influence in shaping global policy conversations, particularly on issues that directly impact developing nations. His participation also aligns with broader efforts to reposition Ghana as a leader in regional and continental advocacy.
Upon his return, government officials and policy analysts highlighted the importance of translating the commitments made at the summit into tangible outcomes for Ghanaians. There is growing expectation that insights gained from the summit will inform policies aimed at strengthening the country’s health systems and preparedness for future crises.
President Mahama’s trip to France not only reinforced Ghana’s diplomatic presence on the global stage but also reaffirmed his commitment to championing Africa’s voice in critical international dialogues.
