The National Security Secretariat has called for early preventive measures to curb potential political violence ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general elections.
National Security Coordinator, COP Osman Abdul Razak, said security agencies’ early warning systems had already detected signs of the recruitment and mobilisation of groups that could potentially be used to perpetrate political violence.

Speaking on the security situation ahead of the elections, COP Abdul Razak explained that political violence does not usually begin during the official campaign period. According to him, the recruitment and organisation of groups that may later be involved in violent activities often start months before elections.
He therefore stressed the importance of using early warning mechanisms to identify potential threats and take appropriate action before they develop into serious security challenges.
COP Abdul Razak cautioned that waiting until political parties officially begin their campaigns could put security agencies in a reactive position. Rather than preventing violence, the agencies could be forced to manage conflicts after they have already occurred.
The National Security Secretariat’s concerns come as political activities are expected to gradually increase ahead of the 2028 elections. The warning highlights the need for continuous monitoring and collaboration among security agencies, political parties and other stakeholders to ensure that political competition does not translate into violence.
COP Abdul Razak’s call for early action is therefore aimed at strengthening Ghana’s preparedness and ensuring that potential threats to electoral peace are addressed before they become difficult to control.
