German flag carrier Lufthansa does not expect flight cancellations due to a shortage of kerosene at its Frankfurt hub, a spokeswoman said on Thursday.
The company has instructed crews to take on additional fuel on flights to Frankfurt to replenish stocks and ensure reliable flight operations. “This is purely a precautionary measure,” the spokeswoman said.
The measures are already having an effect, and the company expects to be able to end them in the foreseeable future.
According to Lufthansa, lower supplies at Germany’s largest airport are due to reduced capacity in the kerosene pipelines, one of which is currently undergoing maintenance, airport operator Fraport confirmed.
The Bild tabloid has reported that low water levels on the Rhine are another factor straining supplies, as tanker ships can only navigate the river to a limited extent.
Fraport pointed to the available pipeline and storage facilities, which are designed to cover demand for around 10 days.
“The airport’s operational capability is therefore not affected,” a Fraport spokesman said. Passengers had nothing to fear, he added.
