The Multimedia Group has emerged as one of the strongest contenders in this year’s awards, with ten nominations across its platforms and programmes.

Among the nominees are Clinton Yeboah, Nathaniel Attoh, Emmanuel Dzivenu, Emmanuel Bright Quaicoe, Philip Osei Bonsu, Nana Boakye Yiadom, Emmanuel Adu Gyamfi and Jemima Andoh.

Two flagship programmes, Badwam on Adom TV and Ekosiisen on Asempa FM, have also received nominations.

Media General follows with eight nominees, while the Ghana News Agency has five journalists on the list.

The five GNA nominees are Gilbert Azeem Tiroog, Anthony Adongo Apubeo, James Amoh Junior, Albert Futukpor and Edward Williams.

The list also features journalists from GBC, including Doreen Ampofo, Prince Kukorku, Esther Aidoo and Kweku Bolton.

Jemima Andoh of JoyNews is also listed among the nominees in the Best Student Journalist category.

Awards Committee explains selection process

Chairman of the nine-member Awards Committee, Mr Kobby Asmah, disclosed that the committee received 327 entries from 206 applicants, out of which 326 were assessed.

The assessment was conducted between October 7 and October 27, 2026, and covered journalistic productions published in 2025.

According to Mr Asmah, the committee assessed the entries across six divisions: print, television, radio, online, digital and new media.

A ten-point assessment framework was applied, with each criterion attracting a score of ten marks, bringing the total possible score to 100 per cent.

The criteria included:

  • Accuracy and factual integrity.

  • Newsworthiness.

  • Ethical standards.

  • Public impact.

  • Originality.

  • Clarity and storytelling.

  • Depth of research.

  • Balance and fairness.

  • Technical quality.

  • Compliance with category requirements.

The committee recommended a minimum qualifying score of 70 per cent for an entry to qualify for an award.

The assessment produced 36 citations across the award categories, culminating in the prestigious GJA/P.A.V. Ansah Journalist of the Year Award.

The committee also identified some shortcomings in submissions, including entries placed in inappropriate categories, stories published outside the eligible period, inaccessible links, illegible materials and photographs submitted without captions.

It consequently recommended training clinics for prospective applicants and improved guidance for future awards submissions.

High-profile attendance expected

The 30th GJA Media Awards is expected to attract prominent personalities from government, traditional leadership, the diplomatic community, corporate Ghana and the media fraternity.

President John Dramani Mahama, a member of the GJA, is expected to attend as the Special Guest of Honour and Keynote Speaker.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is the Patron of the Association, is also expected to grace the occasion.

The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, is expected to chair the ceremony.

More than 1,000 invited guests are anticipated at the event.

GJA President, Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has described the 30th anniversary edition as an important opportunity to celebrate the contributions of journalists and media organisations to Ghana’s democratic governance, national development and socio-economic progress.

He has also appealed to corporate organisations, institutions and individuals who have pledged support for the awards to honour their commitments.

Celebrating three decades of journalistic excellence

The 30th GJA Media Awards represents a significant milestone in the Association’s longstanding efforts to promote professionalism, excellence, ethical journalism and public-interest reporting.

Beyond recognising individual achievements, the awards provide an opportunity to reflect on the media’s contribution to national development, democratic accountability, press freedom and the protection of fundamental human rights.

As the Association prepares to celebrate its 30th edition, attention will also turn to the future of journalism in an increasingly digital environment where artificial intelligence, online abuse, misinformation and hate speech present new challenges.

The ceremony on Saturday, November 7, will ultimately determine the year’s outstanding performers and the recipient of the coveted P.A.V. Ansah Journalist of the Year Award.
