As Vice President, I was honoured to attend the National Dissemination Workshop on the Analysis of Time Use Data on Unpaid Care Work, hosted by the Network for Women’s Rights in Ghana, NETRIGHT, at the Tang Palace Hotel in Accra.
This workshop is part of the UCare Project, a five-year initiative aimed at reducing the heavy and unequal burden of unpaid care and domestic work borne by women and adolescent girls, especially in northern Ghana. For too long, the cooking, cleaning, childcare and care for the elderly that keep our homes and communities running have been invisible in our national data and policy.
NETRIGHT’s analysis of data from the Ghana Living Standards Survey GLSS 6 and the Ghana Time Use Survey GTUS 2009 is changing that. The findings being shared today will help us understand the true dynamics of unpaid care work and how it shapes women’s opportunities, health and economic participation.
Bringing together government institutions, development partners, academia and civil society, this workshop is about turning data into action. Evidence-based advocacy on unpaid care work is critical if we are to build policies that recognise, reduce and redistribute this burden, and move closer to real gender equality in Ghana.
