The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), with support from the Government of Ghana, has secured exclusive terrestrial (free-to-air) broadcast rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ensuring nationwide access to football’s biggest tournament. In a statement issued in Accra, GBC announced the establishment of a National Broadcast Consortium tasked with coordinating coverage of the tournament across Ghana.

The initiative, described as a strategic technical, marketing, and broadcasting framework, is aimed at guaranteeing that all Ghanaians can follow the Black Stars and the global spectacle without subscription barriers. Under the arrangement, a number of television stations have been authorised and licensed through FIFA and New World TV to broadcast the matches. These include GBC channels such as GTV and GTV Sports+, alongside Garden City TV, Obonu TV, Adom TV, Joy Prime, GHOne TV, Agoo TV, Metro TV, Original TV, TV3, Onua TV, Max TV, Sporty TV, Woezor TV, and UTV. For radio stations, GBC indicated that sub-licensing will be required through the corporation before any live commentary or coverage can be transmitted. It cautioned that unauthorized broadcasting of World Cup content will be strictly prohibited, with monitoring to be intensified across traditional and digital platforms.

The corporation also highlighted commercial and sponsorship opportunities tied to the tournament, describing the World Cup as a major platform for brands to reach millions of viewers across Ghana.

GBC and its partners expressed appreciation to the government for its backing, saying the arrangement reinforces efforts to make major global sporting events accessible to all citizens. Legal action and regulatory sanctions, the statement warned, will be taken against any entity that breaches the broadcast rights.
