UNFPA, FIDA Ghana engage youth on sexual rights etc. in Accra.
At a policy dialogue held in Accra, UNFPA Ghana, in partnership with the International Federation of Women Lawyers Ghana- fida, Ghana., sounded the alarm over escalating domestic violence cases across the country.
Recent data from DOVVSU reveals a rising trend in abuse, with many cases going unreported or settled privately, denying survivors justice. Executive Director Susan Aryeetey highlighted the compounded challenges faced by survivors with disabilities, urging for holistic support beyond financial aid.
The dialogue further exposed sharp funding cuts to domestic violence programs – an alarming 88% reduction from GH¢2.7 million to just GH¢337,500. Experts like Frank Wilson Bodza called on government agencies to ensure timely and increased budget allocations, emphasizing the need for medical, legal, and psychosocial services to be properly financed.
Survivors’ access to justice remains hindered by costly medical report fees (GH¢300-800), which many poor women cannot afford. Aryeetey also urged healthcare providers to ease these charges. The event stressed the importance of engaging private sector partners to bolster shelters and support services through corporate social responsibility.
With domestic violence deeply rooted in cultural norms and patriarchy – as recent studies confirm – the need for sustained political will and effective multi-sector collaboration has never been greater.
FIDA-Ghana concluded, “With the right support, Ghana can create a future where justice and care are accessible to all survivors.”
