President John Dramani Mahama has praised Ghana’s diaspora for their vital contributions after foreign remittances hit a record $7.8 billion in 2025, describing the inflow as a testament to their enduring patriotism and trust in the country’s economic future.
Speaking to Parliament during the 2026 State of the Nation Address, President Mahama noted that this figure marks the highest annual remittance ever recorded in Ghana, positioning the diaspora as one of the nation’s most reliable partners in development.
“Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to announce that remittances from our relatives abroad reached an all-time high of $7.8 billion in 2025,” he said, prompting applause from lawmakers in the chamber.
He attributed the milestone to renewed confidence in Ghana’s economic policies and the unwavering commitment of Ghanaians living abroad. According to the President, these funds are not just numbers—they are tangible resources that transform lives and communities nationwide.
President Mahama highlighted the impact of diaspora contributions including: supporting households across the country, funding education for thousands of students, constructing homes and strengthening local communities, providing start-up capital for small businesses and bolstering Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves
He further emphasized that the diaspora’s support is exceptionally valuable, operating without red tape, conditions, or political fanfare.
