Femicide on the rise in Cameroon
FEMICIDE IS RISING IN CAMEROON — AND WE CANNOT LOOK AWAY
Another woman.
Another headline.
Another family shattered.
Femicide — the intentional killing of women and girls because they are women — is no longer something we whisper about. It is happening in our communities, in our neighborhoods, in our homes. And the silence around it is deadly.
We are deeply disturbed by the increasing cases of gender-based killings in Cameroon. Behind every statistic is a daughter. A mother. A sister. A friend. A future cut short.
Violence against women does not begin with murder.
It begins with control.
With humiliation.
With normalized abuse.
With silence.
When society excuses violence, minimizes abuse, or tells women to “endure,” we create fertile ground for tragedy.
Today, we say ENOUGH.
We call for stronger enforcement of laws protecting women and girls.
We call for safe reporting systems and survivor protection mechanisms.
We call for community education that challenges toxic masculinity and harmful norms.
We call for families, churches, schools, and leaders to take early warning signs seriously.
Prevention starts with awareness.
Protection starts with action.
Justice starts with accountability.
To every woman and girl reading this:
Your life is not negotiable.
Your safety is not optional.
Your voice matters.
To every man:
Be the protector of dignity, not the threat to it.
Speak up. Intervene. Refuse to normalise abuse.
Welisane Foundation remains committed to advocating for the safety, dignity, and empowerment of women and girls across Cameroon and beyond. Through education, community engagement and policy advocacy, we will continue to push for a society where women live free from fear.
🕯️ We honor the lives lost.
✊🏽 We stand with survivors.
📢 We demand change.
