The ECOWAS Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations convened the monthly meeting of the ECOWAS Group of Ambassadors to the United Nations on the 26th of June 2025 in New York.
To commence the session, the chairmanship of the ECOWAS Group was officially handed over to Sierra Leone, with expressions of appreciation extended to outgoing deans and the Permanent Mission of Nigeria for their support to the Group’s work.
The meeting was subsequently chaired by Ambassador Michael Imran Kanu, Permanent Representative of Sierra Leone and Chair of the ECOWAS Group, with Ambassador Kinza Jawara-Njai, ECOWAS Permanent Observer to the UN, delivering welcome remarks. The session provided updates on key developments in the ECOWAS region including the outcomes of the 67th Ordinary Summit of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government. The ECOWAS Group reaffirmed its commitment to fostering collaboration and advancing the priorities of peace, security, democracy, and sustainable development within the UN system as integral components of regional stability and integration.
On the same day, the ECOWAS Permanent Observer Mission, in collaboration with the United Nations Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations Western Africa Division (DPPA-DPO WAD), facilitated a consultative session with West Africa Permanent Representatives at the United Nations. The session, chaired by Ms. Martha Pobee, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, provided a platform for a strategic exchange on UN Security Council Resolution 2719, UN80 reforms, and the prevailing situation in West Africa and the Sahel.
In her intervention, Ms. Martha Pobee emphasized the United Nations’ continued commitment to supporting peace, security, and democratic consolidation in West Africa. She further updated the meeting on the ongoing UN80 Reforms, outlining efforts to enhance the effectiveness of the United Nations to better support Member States in addressing current global challenges.
In her intervention, Ambassador Kinza Jawara-Njai provided updates on ECOWAS @50 commemorations, the outcomes of the 67th Ordinary Summit of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, and the region’s perspectives on operationalizing Resolution 2719. She extended ECOWAS’ appreciation to all Permanent Representatives, the UN DPPA-DPO WAD, and partners for their continued support and collaboration in advancing the region’s priorities within the multilateral system.
