Public Affairs Officer of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Rebecca Ekpe says as vice president of the GJA, she would support the President of the Association to prioritize journalists’ welfare, professional development, and digital innovation.
She was speaking on the Uniiq 95.7fm Morning Show with Host Nana Yaw Preko Bimpeh on Friday, June 23, 2025, in a live studio interview at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC),
Madam Ekpe spoke of her experiences occupying the position as Public Affairs Officer of the GJA. She shared experiences on managing GJA’s national image and of the stakeholder engagements, which formed key aspects of her role, indicating that those experiences have positioned her for the role of Vice President of the GJA,
The Journalism Profession she said is evolving to the point that GIA needs forward thinking people and leadership to adapt to current challenges.
On the issue of welfare, Madam Ekpe drew the correlation between emotional and psychological well-being of Journalists and productivity.
“Welfare is not just about physical safety. It’s about emotional well-being, professional needs, and career development,” she said.
Madam Ekpe emphasized the need for enhanced training in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, to keep Ghanaian journalists competitive in the digital age.
She also addressed criticisms about the Accra-centric nature of GJA programs, pledging to decentralize national events and extend opportunities to journalists in the regional and district levels.
“We must rotate activities across the country. Journalists outside Accra deserve access, visibility, and development just as much,” she stated.
The GJA elections are scheduled for Monday, June 30th, 2025, and will see candidates contesting positions at both national and regional levels.
