The Ghana Red Cross Society has launched a GH¢8.3 million emergency flood response operation to support 30,000 people affected by the devastating June 2026 floods across the Greater Accra, Central, Volta and Western North regions.
Speaking at the launch in Accra, the Secretary General of the Ghana Red Cross Society, Eric Gregory Kwatia, said the six-month operation, funded through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF), would provide emergency shelter, cash assistance, healthcare, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services to the most vulnerable households.
He said the floods claimed 30 lives, injured more than 70 people and left 30 others missing, while nearly 70,000 people were affected after torrential rains caused widespread flooding that destroyed homes, displaced families and damaged key infrastructure.
Mr. Kwatia noted that the response would include the distribution of shelter materials, hygiene kits, insecticide treated mosquito nets and cash assistance to affected families. He added that trained volunteers would also provide first aid, psychosocial support, health education and disease prevention services in flood hit communities.
He called on government, development partners, the private sector, humanitarian organisations and the public to support the operation, stressing that collective action was critical to easing the suffering of affected communities and strengthening Ghana’s resilience to future climate-related disasters.
