The African Union Summit on Health has opened in Accra with a renewed call for increased investment, stronger political commitment and efficient management of resources to transform healthcare delivery across the continent.
The high-level meeting has brought together Heads of State and Government, Health Ministers, development partners, health experts and representatives of international organisations, including the United Nations, to deliberate on strategies to strengthen Africa’s health systems and advance universal health coverage.
Opening the summit, speakers highlighted the need for African countries to prioritise health financing, noting that sustainable investment in the sector is critical to improving healthcare access, quality service delivery and building resilient health systems.
They stressed that healthcare should not be viewed merely as a social intervention, but as a strategic investment in Africa’s human capital, economic growth and long-term development.
Despite progress made in expanding healthcare services across the continent, participants acknowledged that financing challenges, infrastructure gaps and limited resources continue to slow efforts towards achieving equitable healthcare for all.
A key focus of the discussions was the need for stronger political leadership and accountability in implementing health policies and programmes. Delegates emphasised that sustained commitment from governments at national, regional and continental levels is essential to achieving measurable improvements in health outcomes.
The summit also underscored the growing importance of digital health technologies in modern healthcare delivery. Participants noted that strengthening digital systems would improve disease surveillance, enhance data collection and analysis, support evidence-based decision-making, and extend healthcare services to underserved communities.
The meeting is expected to provide a platform for African leaders and stakeholders to develop practical solutions to address persistent health challenges, while advancing the continent’s goal of achieving universal health coverage.
