The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has launched the ECOWAS School Clubs in The Gambia, marking a significant step in strengthening regional integration and empowering young people to become ambassadors of peace, unity and development across West Africa.

The initiative was officially unveiled on 3 July 2026 during a stakeholder dialogue in Kololi, where government officials, educators, students, civil society organisations, media representatives and development partners gathered to discuss the critical role of young people in advancing the ECOWAS vision of a peaceful, prosperous and integrated region.
The ECOWAS School Clubs are designed to introduce students to the history, values and objectives of the regional bloc while encouraging leadership, civic responsibility, intercultural understanding and active citizenship. Through debates, cultural exchanges, educational activities and community engagement, the clubs will help young people appreciate the importance of regional cooperation and inspire them to contribute to West Africa’s development.
Speaking during the launch, participants underscored the importance of investing in youth as future leaders who will shape the region’s peace, security and economic progress. They noted that empowering students with knowledge about ECOWAS and regional integration would strengthen solidarity among member states and encourage greater participation in initiatives that promote democracy, social cohesion and sustainable development.
The launch in The Gambia forms part of ECOWAS’ broader efforts to engage young people across its member states by fostering a deeper understanding of regional identity and shared values. The programme is expected to serve as a platform for nurturing informed and responsible citizens committed to advancing the goals of integration and cooperation throughout West Africa.
As ECOWAS continues to celebrate decades of regional cooperation, the establishment of school clubs is seen as a strategic investment in the next generation, ensuring that young people play a central role in building a more united, peaceful and resilient West African community.
The launch of ECOWAS School Clubs in The Gambia reflects the regional bloc’s growing emphasis on youth engagement, recognizing that educating and empowering young people is essential to sustaining regional integration, peace and development across West Africa.
