The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced with deep sorrow the passing of former President of the ECOWAS Commission, James Victor Gbeho, who died on June 13, 2026, at the age of 91.

Ambassador Gbeho served as President of the ECOWAS Commission from February 18, 2010, to March 1, 2012, during a critical period in the institution’s history. His tenure came shortly after the transformation of the ECOWAS Executive Secretariat into a Commission, a reform aimed at strengthening the organization’s effectiveness and capacity to advance regional integration.

According to ECOWAS, his leadership played a significant role in consolidating the Community’s institutions, promoting cooperation among member states, and enhancing the organization’s reputation as one of Africa’s most successful regional blocs.

Before assuming the Commission’s top leadership position, Ambassador Gbeho had already distinguished himself through his service to ECOWAS. In 1995, he was appointed the Community’s Special Representative for Liberia, where he contributed to regional efforts to restore peace and constitutional order during one of the country’s most turbulent periods.

Beyond ECOWAS, Ambassador Gbeho built an illustrious diplomatic career spanning several decades. He served as Ghana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and later as the United Nations Special Representative for Somalia, earning international recognition for his commitment to diplomacy and conflict resolution.

The ECOWAS Commission noted that throughout his career, Ambassador Gbeho remained steadfast in his dedication to peacebuilding, regional cooperation, and public service.

The Commission extended its condolences to his family, the Government and people of Ghana, President John Dramani Mahama, the diplomatic community across West Africa, and all those whose lives he touched through his distinguished service.

“Ambassador Gbeho’s contributions to Ghana, West Africa, and the international community will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude,” the statement said.

His passing marks the end of an era for one of Ghana’s most accomplished diplomats and a respected advocate for African unity and integration.

May his soul rest in perfect peace.
