ECOWAS Permanent Delegation in Côte d’Ivoire mobilizes women around vision 2050

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has commemorated its 51st anniversary with a series of activities in Grand-Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire, aimed at promoting peace, regional integration, and civic engagement while highlighting the critical role of women in shaping the future of West Africa.

Organized by the ECOWAS Permanent Delegation in Côte d’Ivoire on June 8 and 9, 2026, the anniversary celebration was held under the theme of peace, regional integration, and citizen participation.

The activities commenced with a workshop focused on promoting the ECOWAS Vision 2050 framework and the Community’s Early Warning and Response System. The workshop brought together queen mothers, women leaders, civil society organizations, institutional partners, media practitioners, and community stakeholders to discuss strategies for building a peaceful and prosperous West Africa.

Participants explored the role of women in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and sustainable development, while also examining how local communities can contribute to regional stability through active engagement with ECOWAS initiatives.

The event underscored the importance of ECOWAS Vision 2050, which seeks to transform the regional bloc into a community of people living in peace and prosperity, with strong institutions, inclusive governance, and sustainable economic growth.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, discussions emphasized strengthening awareness of ECOWAS programs at the grassroots level and encouraging greater citizen participation in regional integration efforts. Special attention was given to empowering women as key agents of change in advancing social cohesion, economic development, and democratic governance across West Africa.

Officials noted that women’s leadership remains essential to achieving the objectives of Vision 2050 and ensuring that peace and development initiatives are inclusive and responsive to community needs.

The anniversary activities also provided a platform for dialogue between ECOWAS representatives and local stakeholders on the challenges facing the region, including security threats, social inequalities, and economic vulnerabilities. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to supporting regional cooperation and fostering a shared vision for a more united and resilient West Africa.

Founded on May 28, 1975, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) continues to play a central role in promoting economic integration, peace, security, and sustainable development among its member states.

The 51st anniversary celebration in Côte d’Ivoire served as both a reflection on the bloc’s achievements and a call to action for citizens, particularly women, to actively contribute to realizing the aspirations of ECOWAS Vision 2050.
