I received a briefing from the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, led by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, on key developments and ongoing interventions in the region.
Regarding security, the Council outlined measures taken in response to recent incidents, including the murder of a Kusasi Chief. These include registering motorbikes to strengthen security oversight and providing security protection for other chiefs. They also addressed tensions arising from youth confrontations with law enforcement at illegal mining sites. I commended their efforts to restore calm and maintain stability, and acknowledged the invaluable guidance and support of His Majesty Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II in promoting peace in the region.

Sanitation and infrastructure remain central to the region’s development agenda. The National Sanitation Day exercises have yielded positive results, with the desilting of major drains at Asokwa and Ahodwo improving drainage and paving the way for the dualisation of key roads. Under the Big Push initiative, major road projects are ongoing, including the Kumasi–Sunyani Road, the dualisation of the Ahodwo and Santasi Roundabout, the Sekyere–Kwamang and Sekyere–Nsuta roads, as well as the Outer Kumasi Ring Road. The redesign of the Suame Interchange from a four-tier to a three-tier structure is also aimed at reducing costs and minimizing demolitions. These projects are enhancing mobility, easing congestion, and facilitating trade across the region.

The Council also briefed me on market and social welfare issues. Efforts are ongoing to rehabilitate drug users and help them reintegrate into society, including involving them in sanitation activities. In response to recent market fires and other emergencies, regional disaster management teams have been activated and are working closely with market boards and management committees to improve preparedness and response. Construction of 24-hour markets is also advancing, supported by allocations from the District Assembly Common Fund.

I commend the Council for their dedication and hard work, emphasizing that security, sanitation, and sustained public education through schools, markets, and community platforms must remain priorities. I encouraged continued collaboration and deeper public engagement to ensure lasting stability and development in the Ashanti Region.
