Vatican City, Rome has stepped up security ahead of the Funeral and Burial ceremony for 266th Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis on Saturday, April 26, 2025.
The city has seen a surge in victors, as thousands sought to pay their final respects to the Pontiff whose body has been lying in state at the St Peter’s Basilica, since Wednesday, ahead of the funeral Mass.
Many International dignitaries and Heads of State have confirmed to attend the Service expected to wittiness one of the largest gatherings of Catholic Faithful at the St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City.
Vatican City comes alive in a moment of mixed emotions. Thousands of mourners lined up at the ST Peter’s Basilica united in grief to bid farewell to the Head of the Roman Catholic Church. Ironically, they are also united in celebrating a legacy of peace, tolerance and love for humanity. Such was the man, Pope Francis whose 12-year reign as Head of the Roman Catholic Church comes to an end on Saturday, April 26.
According to the Vatican, Leaders and Representatives from some 170 countries would be in attendance. US President Donald Trump has confirmed attendance, while Russian President Vadimir Putin would be presented by his cultural Minister.
Other high-profile dignities billed to attend the Pontiff’s funeral in Rome are the royals from Kensington’s Place in London.
Pope Francis was a native of Argentina, its President Javier Milei would also be present.
Security is at top notch as surveillance drones and snipers have been deployed around St. Peter’s Square. Reports say Rome is preparing to throw a thoroughly modern security shield around the ancient rituals of a papal funeral following the huge crowds.
Tourists arriving for the funeral speak of a massive security plan, with airport-style security checks and a large police presence to manage the arrival of world leaders and hundreds of thousands of expected mourners to the Funeral Mass of Pope Francis at St Peters’ Basilica in Rome.
