Rebecca Ekpe Embarks on Listening Tour, Pledges Reforms in GJA Leadership Bid

Rebecca Ekpe, a respected voice in Ghanaian journalism, has launched a grassroots engagement tour as part of her campaign for the Vice-Presidential slot of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA). Her made a stop at the Multimedia Group in Accra, where she interacted directly with journalists about the realities they face in today’s media landscape.
Rather than delivering a standard campaign pitch, Madam Ekpe chose to listen. She invited candid conversations on issues such as job insecurity, lack of professional development opportunities, threats to press freedom, and the underrepresentation of journalists in national discourse.
“This isn’t just about winning votes—it’s about understanding your lived experiences as media professionals,” she told the gathering. “We need a GJA that doesn’t just exist, but one that advocates, protects, and empowers.”
Currently serving as the Association’s Public Affairs Officer, Madam. Ekpe said she believes the GJA can continue to be repositioned as a stronger force for journalist welfare and ethical media practice through strategic reforms, collaborative leadership, and sustained advocacy.
Journalists at Multimedia welcomed the dialogue, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to voice their concerns directly to a candidate. Several described the meeting as refreshing, citing her humility and genuine concern for the profession.
Her campaign is expected to intensify in the coming weeks with visits to other media organizations and regional chapters, as she gathers more insights to inform her leadership agenda.
If elected, Madam Ekpe says she would champion policies focused on journalist safety, capacity building, and institutional visibility for the GJA.
