As the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) heads to the polls, all eyes are on the candidates vying to lead the Association into its next chapter. Campaign slogans have echoed across newsrooms, promises to have been made, and visions shared. But beyond the speeches and manifestos lies a critical question: Do you really know the candidates and the positions they seek to occupy.
Interest in this year’s, GJA, election has reached an all-time high, with journalists across the country closely following the race for leadership. From newsrooms in Accra to regional press houses, conversations have been dominated by campaign messages, candidate debates, and the future direction of the Association. The surge in enthusiasm to grab the six national position, which includes President, Vice and Organizing Secretary, reflects a growing desire for reform, stronger representation, and a more responsive leadership that speaks to the evolving needs of media practitioners in Ghana.
Incumbent President and Managing Editor of Daily and Business Analyst newspapers Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, faces a stiff competition from a first-time contender Charles Yao Mawusi who is a Development Communications strategist with more than 20 years’ experience in journalism.
The race for the Vice President position is shaping up to be a two-horse contest, with both aspirants bringing prior experience from the Association’s Public Affairs management. Unlike three years ago when the slot went unopposed, this year it has become a keenly contested battleground between GBC’s Editor-in-Chief, Rebecca Ekpe, and Mary Mensah of the Daily Graphic.
GBC’s Editor in Chief Dominic Hlordzi hits it off with multi media’s Akwasi Agyemang. Assistant Manager at GTV, Theodora Amedetor, is going head-to-head with Bertha Badu-Agyei of the Ghana News Agency in the contest for Treasurer. In the case of Organizing Secretary Eastern Regional Chairman of the GJA Maxwell Kudeko faces off with Daily Graphic’s Suleiman Mustapha, whereas GNA’s Cesear Abagali, makes a comeback after a loss three years ago by taking on Freelance Journalist Zadok Kwame Gyesi.
From experienced newsroom leaders to dynamic voices advocating reform, the race reflects a diverse blend of ideas and ambitions, all aimed at strengthening journalism in Ghana. From the news team of GBC, we extend our best wishes to all the candidates, may the most deserving and capable emerge victorious.
