From 27 to 28 August 2025, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), in partnership with the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC), organised a regional workshop in Abuja, Nigeria, on protecting elections in the information environment.
Funded by the European Union through the Strengthening Pan-African Capacities for Electoral Observation and Assistance (SPEC) project, the workshop brought together Electoral Management Bodies, regional organisations, and electoral networks from across Africa to address the growing impact of disinformation, misinformation, and information manipulation on electoral integrity and democratic processes.
Participants from ten West African countries and international partners explored strategies to safeguard electoral systems against digital threats, promote public confidence, and strengthen regional cooperation. The initiative forms part of International IDEA’s global project on electoral integrity in the digital age, supported by the German Federal Foreign Office.
